Behind the Scenes #2- Under the thin layer of clouds and the calm narrator.
Pretend you are a warrior, a big cat, a tiny bee. And books I'm reading. And a photo dump.
Hello, dear ones. Welcome to the 2nd edition of Behind the Scenes or Under the Grass Layer, where there are tiny stones and not much actual soil, apparently. Our grass has not been watered for quite some time, and all sorts of things are coming to light. Yes.
This is the newsletter where I offer paid readers a glimpse into my working, creative, raw wild, and parenting life. It’s all the same, really. I’m terrible at maintaining the edges of things, no matter how much I try. It’s all connected, all related. I write to make sense of the nonstop flow of patterns and sensations that come and go. Writing helps me find order and to remember that I am allowed to inhabit my life. Also, I write to tell stories that will amuse and encourage you.
First of all, some business. There will be two Group Writing Sessions on Zoom this month for all paid subscribers to join. The first is on May 7 at 5 pm PST. (That’s May 8th at 7 am Bangkok time.) I’m still figuring out the time of the second one, but the date will be May 21st if you’re in North America.
I’ll include the link at the end of this letter.
The last time I wrote to you, I was getting ready for a writing week: sorting through the last edits of God of All Flying Things. It went well, although because I am still not a superhero, I got less done than I planned. (Time is such a weird and wily thing.)
I edited paintings and poetry until my brain spun. I swam in the hot afternoons and then went back to working. In the evenings, Solomon and I ate Vietnamese food and watched Netflix.
Those days in Vietnam, both with the whole family and with just Solomon, are something I think I’ll always treasure. The feel of them, when I look back, is warm like stones, soft like candlelight, bright like sun on water. And of course, there was the coffee. (I just took a five-minute break to order Vietnamese coffee on Lazada. Writing about it reminded me that I want to try making salt coffee at home.)
