the doorway
here is your life
and here is the doorway
to the Kingdom
you imagine, i think,
that you will step through
and all the gathered stresses
that pull at your skirts
will fall away
but
i don’t know—they seem to remain
and you walk, now, with your head high
you come calling, you visit the weeds
you are tangled when you want to be free
i have advice for you: you can be kind
and free
you can bend and you can fly
Jesus, your King, is kind
and he never let others define him,
he never let others tell him what to be
or if they tried,
he regarded them with a half smile
and a heart full of love
no, it is never clean and tidy, it seems
hard things keep tumbling toward you
sing anyway, dance anyway, harvest joy
arms full of tomatoes, arms flying
old age creeping in, dance anyway.
